What happens after thyroid RFA?

Once the procedure is completed a small plaster is placed over the entry site. An ice pack over the neck helps with any soreness or bruising afterwards. Additional pain killers can be given as required. Patients can sit up immediately and eat and drink when they feel ready. Most patients are discharged after a standard 2 hour recovery period. All patients should be discharged with the support of a family member or friend who can stay with them overnight. If this is not possible overnight admission can be arranged.

Patients are discharged with a written advice leaflet on what to expect and when they might seek more urgent help. A contact number is provided in the event of any questions or concerns. The first follow up appointment is normally scheduled for 3 months after the procedure. The largest proportion of nodule shrinkage should occur in this time. An ultrasound is performed and an assessment of nodule shrinkage and improvement in symptoms following treatment is made. All being well patients will then typically have further follow up appointments at 1 year and 3 years after treatment.
