What are the benefits of thyroid RFA?

  • Minimally invasive. Most thyroid ablations are performed under local anaesthetic and through one or two needle access points without making an incision. This means a scarless procedure and same day discharge.
  • Fast recovery. Most patients can resume normal daily activities within a day or two. This means less downtime and a faster return to work.
  • Thyroid sparing. RFA treatment is confined to the nodule being treated so the risk of thyroid underactivity and the need for life long thyroid replacement treatment is rare.
  • Effective. A single RFA session will result in a greater than 50% volume shrinkage of the treated nodule in the majority of patients. Most will experience more shrinkage depending on the size and composition of their nodule. Shrinkage is strongly associated with improvement in symptom and cosmetic improvements.
  • Safe. Thyroid RFA has a low complication rate and compares favourably with surgery in the treatment of benign disease.
  • Repeatable. If necessary RFA can be repeated. Patients can still undergo surgery after having thyroid RFA.
