What happens after my thyroid ethanol ablation?

Once the procedure has been completed patients are transferred to a recovery area and kept for one to two hours. An icepack over the neck helps with any local discomfort and additional painkiller can be given for any soreness or bruising. Patients can sit up and are encouraged to eat and drink when they feel able. Most patients recover very well and are discharged as planned with a written advice sheet. It is recommended that patients go home with the support of a family member or friend. As an additional precaution they should have someone with them overnight in the rare event of any problems they need help with.

Patients may notice some fluid reaccumulating in the days after the procedure which is normal. Following this there should be progressive shrinkage and patients normally undergo a follow up ultrasound scan at three months.
