Which thyroid nodules require treatment and what are the options?

Not all nodules require treatment or follow up scans. If a nodule has been assessed and diagnosed as behaving and appearing benign (non-cancerous) and does not cause sufficient symptoms or cosmetic issues to be troublesome then no treatment is necessary. The majority of thyroid nodules will fall in to this category.

The treatment for thyroid nodules that are confirmed or suspicious for cancer or malignancy are dependent on many factors including the type and size of tumor, the stage (extent) of disease and the fitness and wishes of the patient. The possible treatment options are considered by thyroid specialists working within a multi-disciplinary team to enable patients to make an informed choice.
